Financial site MoneyTips is warning credit and debit cardholders to check their monthly statement bills for fraudulent purchases made through their iTunes account.
According to recent reports, there are cardholders experiencing unknown charges that read ‘APL*ITUNES.CON/BILL 866-712-7753 CA’.
Fraudsters test the waters by creating small purchases in a cardholder’s iTunes account then using the card details for massive charges.
MoneyTips urge cardholders to cancel payment account if purchases made using iTunes doesn’t match with the ones on the statement bill.
“To dispute the fraudulent charges, cancel your payment account and create a new account moving forward. If you do, make sure to use a credit card if you have one rather than a debit card,” said MoneyTips.
In light with this recent news, Apple made a statement saying customers can contact support if they don’t recognize a charge. However, they also encourage customers to double check subscriptions, purchases and sharing of Apple ID to check if charges made are valid.
“If you compare your statement to your purchase history and still don’t recognize a charge, you can contact Apple Support. If you don’t use your Apple ID to make purchases from the iTunes Store or App Store and see charges on your statement, contact Apple for help with Apple ID account security,” said Apple in a statement.
Credit Card Fraud on the Rise
More and more financial consumers are being victims of fraud in the United States for credit card information breach. In fact, in a study conducted by AARP in 2018, it is found out that 47 per cent of adults experienced fraudulent purchase on their credit or debit card.
Scammers are able to get sensitive credit card information through email and sometimes, calling cardholders and pretending to be tax collectors or bank representatives.
