Several months after the controversial Larry Nassar scandal, Michigan State University appears to have a new school insurance policy, excluding sexual misconduct from the policy.
The university has paid $500 million in settlements to a total of 332 girls and women for its failure to report and manage internal investigations in relation to Larry Nassar’s sexual assault and behaviour.
According to the prosecutor of the Nassar case, MSU President Lou Anna Simon is already aware of the sexual misconduct allegations of the accused in 2014 but failed to make an action. Although Simon denied the charge, she already resigned earlier that year, a few hours after Nassar has been sentenced.
With more than 156 testimonies from victims, Nassar pleaded guilty in court and is charged with seven counts of criminal sexual conduct last 2018. He was sentenced forty to 175 years in prison by Judge Rosemarie Aquilina.
Assessment of Insurance Coverage
After the scandal, the university is said to have created its own insurance company under Aesir Insurance Co. In an article published by the Wall Street Journal, the institution said it continuously assess insurance coverage and self-insurance programs for its ‘interest of going forward.’ It is in the works in securing that this type of incident won’t take a toll once again in the university’s grounds.
Meanwhile, the institution is not keen on giving statements to other news and media outlets. No comments have been made to answer to insurance policies inquiries of reporters.
