A recent poll released by Fox News on Sunday revealed that there is much stronger support for Elizabeth Warren’s proposed wealth tax over Pres. Donald Trump’s proposed US-Mexico border wall.
In a poll that involved 1,000 U.S. registered voters, Fox News identified that 68% of the participants approve “creating an annual 2% wealth tax on an individual’s worth over $50 million in addition to income tax,” a wealth tax that is quite similar to the one proposed by Warren.
On the other hand, the poll showed that only 44% of the 1,000 participants backed the idea of building a wall between the U.S. and Mexico, a plan raised by Trump during his 2016 presidential campaign.
The poll, which was conducted from Dec 8 to Dec 11, had a 3% margin of error, Fox News claimed. The results, which showed Warren’s wealth tax having the biggest backing, marked the highest level of support to any of the Democratic proposals surveyed so far.
The latest poll isn’t the first survey to show massive support towards Warren’s wealth tax, which plans to tax the wealth of the nation’s ultra-rich. Under the Democratic candidate’s proposal, households will be compelled to pay an annual 2% tax on every dollar of net worth exceeding $50 million and a 6% tax on net worth exceeding $1 billion.
While supporters say the proposed wealth tax will help minimize the gaping income inequality across the nation, critics argue that taxing the ultra-rich will stifle growth and will be difficult to implement.
In addition to the clear partisan split between the supporters of wealth tax and the US-Mexico border, the poll also revealed that majority of Americans were in favor of President Donald Trump’s impeachment and removal from office, in which the President responded by tweeting:
“The @foxnewpolls, always inaccurate, are heavily weighted toward Dems. So ridiculous — same thing happened in 2016. They got it all wrong. Get a new pollster!”
